Assignment:

There is a lot of health information out there and everyone has a spin on it. Some of it is valid, important, well researched information. Other information is less accurate in their claims. It is an important skill to be able to decipher between what is a fictitious claim and what is accurate. For this assignment please chose ONE of the following claims, decide whether it is true or not based on the research you do, cite relevant research to show why you made your decision about whether it is true or not, and describe the pros and cons of the claim.

A. Going Vegan is the only way to save the planet

B. The keto diet is the safest way to lose weight

C. Wearing Face Masks doesn't prevent the spread of illness and it's actually bad for your health

D. Marijuana can cure anyone's anxiety

Answer the following questions:

1. Describe the health claim (e.g. what is a vegan diet)

2. Describe why the claim might be considered true by some people (based on research, not just personal opinion)

3. Using research from reliable sources (NOT WIKAPEDIA; think Health Canada, Academic Journals, Alberta Health, dieticians of Canada) make an argument for why this health claim is true or not true.

For example: It is recommended for pregnant women to exercise throughout their pregnancy if they don't have complications, although they should check with their doctors before starting an exercise program (Healthwise Staff, 2016). Healthwise Staff (2016) has used research in their recommendations from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC); therefore I believe that it is safe for most women to exercise during pregnancy because both HealthLink BC where the Healthwise Staff work and SOGC are reliable sources of information.

4. Write about why as a health care professional it is important to check sources of information, dates, and know what the most current research is saying?
