Assignment
Pollution can occur one place and have a profound impact far from its original location. Examples of these far reaching impacts can be seen when examining pollution stemming from the following:
1. Nuclear accidents (e.g., Fukushima)
2. Destruction of tropical rainforests (e.g., the Amazon)
3. Dumping of waste into the ocean (e.g., Pacific Garbage Patch )
4. Accidental chemical spills (e.g., Bhopal)
5. Volcanic Eruptions (e.g., Kilauea Volcano).
Choose and research an event that has had a significant impact on humans and/or the environment far from its place of origin. You may choose one from the list above, or have a different event approved by your teacher.
Choose a method of presentation for your findings. You may wish to choose to create an infographic, a Google My Map, or other form of presentation that allows you to share your findings about the event, the pollution involved and its impacts, as well as, your own reasoned judgement about the management of the pollution event.
Present your research findings on the following:
1. Description of the event, place, time, and scale
2. Description of the type(s) of pollution involved
3. How it impacted humans and/or the environment (discuss how far its impacts were felt and do not solely focus on the local impacts).
Provide answers to the following:
Question 1. What international agreements are or were in place in regards to the issue? Have these been effective?
Question 2. How do you feel this event's impact could have been better managed or contained?
Question 3. What do you think should be put in place to ensure that it does not occur again at the same level of severity?
