PERSUASIVE SPEECH ASSIGNMENT
You will be performing a persuasive speech for the class. Your job as a speaker is to persuade or convince the audience in favor of hiring you for a position in their organization. In general you must:
• Stimulate INTEREST and ATTENTION of the audience.
• Provide the audience with COMPELLING support for your position.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT
Select an entry level job position that you would like to apply
• Select a job that you think has potential.
• Apply for an entry level position related to your discipline. For example, if your major is accounting, apply for an entry level accounting position.
• When presenting, assume you have completed your diploma and are entering the workforce.
Remember: you must make the connection between your job selection and your qualifications for your audience. Ensure to state the job you are applying for in the introduction of you speech.
2. Use verbal support.
• Provide support for your argument.
• What information would be useful in projecting a good image of yourself to the company? i. Some ideas to consider include:
1. Who am I?
2. What is the role about & how am I a good fit for it?
3. What are other interesting things I have done; like to do?
4. Employment history, skills, volunteer experience, etc.?
3. Restrict your speech to fit the time limit.
Practice your speech before presenting in front of the class to check your time Revise if necessary to fit the time limit.
• The presentation is 5 minutes long with 2 minutes of questions and answers.
• There will be a penalty for any speech which fails to meet or exceeds the time limit by more than 30 seconds.
4. During the Presentation
• Have a positive attitude. Smile. Breath.
• Be professional in communicating but stay relaxed. Face the class. Talk to the entire class.
• Speak clearly and audibly. Make it possible for everyone to hear you easily.
• Make the presentation interesting and memorable (within professional limits)
