You are the public information officer for the Viper City Fire Department near Thunder Bay, Ontario. In recent years, the department has been concerned with the negativity surrounding their department and has strived to project itself as an organization that is part of the community. Using the information below, and our template, write a news release that is consistent with that goal.

The information is in no particular order. As always, it is up to you to decide what specific news will make for a strong headline, subhead, and pique the press's interest. Think: What information will jump out at them and prove the program newsworthy?

using our NEWS RELEASE template. Select the correct info for your news release. Use the inverted pyramid.

  • This program costs $500,000 a year to run.
  • The program is designed for seniors 65 and older who live alone at home, although anyone with health concerns age 55 or older can take part.
  • The program is called Project We Care.
  • Here is how the program works: each day participants in the program phone Betty White, a fire department clerk, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. If they do not call by 9:15 a.m., Miss White dispatches emergency personnel to the home to make sure all is well.
  • The program mascot is a cat named George.
  • The Viper City Fire Department today celebrated the first anniversary of the innovative We Care program.
  • The fire personnel have keys for all participants' homes so they do not have to resort to damaging doors if no one answers.
  • Miss White adds that many people enjoy the program because she might be the only human voice they hear throughout their whole day.  "It makes them feel less alone," she claims. "It gives them someone to talk to." Ruth Dewey, a participant whose husband died three years ago, echoes that sentiment. "It's nice to think someone cares about me and is there to help me if I need it."
  • A newly designed logo for the program was launched this year.
  • Over two hundred participants and their family members came to the program's anniversary celebration last night, hosted by Fire Chief Jim Barry, whose idea it was to launch Project We Care.
  • Since the program started a year ago, Miss White notes that three lives have been saved, including the life of one woman who had collapsed on her kitchen floor of a massive heart attack, and was found with vital signs absent.
  • The fire personnel were able to resuscitate her and keep her alive until paramedics arrived. Currently, a total of seven hundred and eighteen people are participating in Project We Care but more are welcome.
  • Fire fighters take part in training for fire safety 12 times a year.
  • Project We Care is serving as an example for other fire departments; six other forces in Ontario are considering implementing it in the next year.
  • Coffee and cake were served and much merriment and many thanks ensued.
