Problem

If you are taking or have taken Sociology of the Family, you have studied this topic in depth, but if not, have you thought deeply about how the form, image, definition and function of family has changed over time? Some of these changes are reflected in the ways gendered roles have changed and others are a result of the legalization of same-sex marriage.

A. How have these social and legal changes altered the institution of family?

B. We know that the rate of marriage in the US has fallen and the age at first marriage has risen throughout the world - including the US. Is formal, civil marriage as important now as it once was? Family as an institution of society have changed over time. What are ways that the changes in family are both the result of and a reflection of the changes in roles of men and women?

C. The symbolic value of marriage (especially the symbolism of a wedding) is a part of US culture. What are the aspects of culture that reinforce this, and what in our culture and changing way of life might signal a decrease in importance?
