Using the required sources you have studied in Module 1, address the following questions:

• What images does the word "empire" conjure in your mind? Do those images have positive or negative associations? And why do you think that's the case?
• Based on the readings you've done in this module, what would you say are the defining characteristics of an empire? In what ways do the authors agree or disagree in their definitions of "empire"?
• Although formal empires no longer exist today, is "empire" still a valid category of historical analysis? Is the study of "empire" still significant in 2024? Why? Or why not?

• Copy and paste the questions into a Word Document. You can answer the questions individually. You do not need to answer them as part of a coherent essay.
• Collectively, your answers must be at least 500 wods in length. You are welcome to write more. Headings and citations do not count toward this assignment's minimum word limit.
• You must be specific in your answers and do yor best to connect your thoughts to the assigned sources. Remember, the goal of this assignment is for you to practice the analysis of historical sources and create evidence-based answers. Accordingly, to do well in this assignmet, you must support your ideas and arguments with examples and evidence from the assigned sources. Make sure to discuss at least one example from the assigned sources for questions 2 and 3 (and if you can use examples for question 1 as well).
• When you report an example from a source, you can quote (report the words used by the author verbatim) or paraphrase. There are cases in which quoting is more effective than paraphrasing and vice versa. If you are unfamiliar with when it's appropriate to quote and when it's better to paraphrase, please review this fantastic resource
• Regardless of quoting or paraphrasing, you need to include an in-text citation whenever you use information extracted from a source. For this assignment, when citing, please use in-text citations, i.e., citations that you include in the body of your work (as opposed to a footnote). In-text citations should include the author's last name, followed by a page number. If the author's name is unavailable, use the source's title. If the page number is unavailable, it's okay not to include that information. An example of an in-text citation for this module's source assignment is:
• "Officially, there are no empires now, only 190 plus nation-states." (Ferguson, 46)
• There is no need to add a bibliography at the end of your assignment unless you are using external sources (= sources I have not assigned).
• Organizing your response logically, quoting sources correctly, and using correct grammar and spelling all count as part of your grade for this assignment. Make sure to edit/proofread your assignment before turning it in.
