Discussion Post: Adolescence Influences Experiences and Impact on Clients

Problem 1) Discuss your adolescence in the context of relationships, sexual pleasure, and sexuality. Which people or groups had the most influence on your ideas about those topics when you were a teenager? What were the overt and covert messages you received on these topics as an adolescent? What types of sexual encounters did you experience from the ages of 13-18 and how did you feel about those experiences both then and now? Include some thoughts on how your experiences may impact how you work with clients, both positively and negatively.

Problem 2) Discuss your beliefs, feelings, and opinions of relationships, sexual pleasure, and sexuality as an adult now. If you are an older adult, (Suppose I am an old woman) feel free to discuss how those things may have changed and developed as you have aged. Some students will find it helpful to discuss their young adulthood separately from their middle adulthood. What has primarily influenced your ideas about those topics as an adult? Are you comfortable with your current sexual life both in terms of behavior and identity? If so, what has contributed to that level of comfort? If not, what obstacles are challenging you?

Problem 3) Reflect on how your earlier sexual attitudes, beliefs, and practices may have changed over your lifespan thus far. Finally, think about the future and imagine your older self in late adulthood. What do you hope for that person in terms of his/her relationships, sexual pleasure, and sexuality? Include some thoughts on how your experiences may impact how you work with clients, both positively and negative
