Question: What has been the historiographical debate about the nature of plantation slavery? Use the essay that you read entitled "The Nature of Plantation Slavery" and well as the classroom discussion as guides to developing your answer. Make sure that you include the views of the Founding Fathers and contemporaries of antebellum slavery in addition to the major schools of thoughts and the historians representative of those schools of thought. How has the context of the times influenced the historiography of slavery studies? Explain your answer. (Use outline 21 as a guide. What was the existence for slaves versus free blacks during the antebellum period and/or the American experience prior to emancipation? Explain your answer. (You will also want to include at least some content from the Outline 23A - D series of classroom notes about slaves and free blacks. It is realized, however, that every single bit of information from these four outlines may not be included, but you should at least be able to show that you consulted the material.
