Assignment: Injury Prevention, Establishing a Safety Committee to Implement Inspections and Audits, and Emergency Preparedness
Introduction
During Unit 4, you have studied the means to implement prevention measures in MyWorkplace and ways in which you can plan and manage crises.
This assignment provides you with the opportunity to prepare additional elements for the Occupational Health and Safety Program you are developing for MyWorkplace.
If you have not already done so, set up a filing system so that you can add supplements to this program as the course progresses. Remember, although an electronic file will give you greater versatility, it is essential to keep regular backups to avoid the massive impact to your course outcome from data loss.
This assignment builds on the program you have already begun to develop for MyWorkplace.
Part A: Lockout or Ergonomics
Instructions
Regarding injury prevention, address the topic of either lockout or ergonomics appropriately to include in the Occupational Health and Safety Plan you are developing for MyWorkplace. Submit this injury prevention plan to your Open Learning Faculty Member for grading.
Part B: Health and Safety Committee and Inspection and Auditing Plan
Instructions
Examine Activity 4-2, in which you devised a health and safety committee, along with an inspection plan and auditing plan. Develop these programs so that they are ready to implement in the work environment you propose in MyWorkplace. Submit this plan to your Open Learning Faculty Member.
Part C: Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Management
Instructions
Using the outline for two emergency preparedness and crisis management plans you developed in Activity 4-7, complete these plans for inclusion in your occupational health and safety plan for MyWorkplace. Submit these plans to your Open Learning Faculty Member.
Use the following guidelines from Activity 4-7as you develop your emergency preparedness plans:
1. How will you ensure everyone knows there is a need to evacuate the area?
2. Are there other disaster scenarios that might conflict with the evacuation program you have developed? For example, in earthquake, evacuating the building can be more dangerous than finding shelter within the building due to falling debris.
3. How many emergency responders do you need to ensure evacuation runs smoothly?
4. What happens when your emergency responders are away from work?
5. How do you ensure emergency responders always remember their duties?
6. What steps do you need to take to protect emergency responders from harm?
7. Who is in charge and responsible for each section of the plan? What are the specific roles and responsibilities related to each step?
8. How much will your emergency response plan cost the business each year? Can the business bear this cost? Where is there opportunity for cost reduction without impacting the program? You may need to do some research to answer this question.
Supplementary Information
As you develop each plan, consider these steps:
Step 1. Be clear about what you want to achieve and why you want to achieve it.
Step 2. Consider the strategy necessary to achieve it, bearing in mind the people that will need to implement it. The programs must be workable.
Step 3. Trim out all wasteful operations, while retaining the integrity of the program.

Assignment : Leading to Achieve a Positive Safety Culture through the Development of an Occupational Health and Safety Program
Introduction
Congratulations! At this point, you have completed the four other assignments required for this course, and this is your last assignment.
The previous assignments led you through the development of most of the required components for an occupational health and safety program, MyWorkplace, that you may be able to use in your present workplace or one in which you aspire to be a leader in health and safety.
In this assignment, you will develop plans for an organizational safety culture that will be ethical, sustainable, and beneficial to all those associated with the workplace (customer, contractors, employees, and vendors).
Part A: Achieving a Positive Safety Culture
Instructions
Develop your plans for achieving a positive safety culture in the organization you have chosen for MyWorkplace, and send them to your Open Learning Faculty Member. Please include the following areas:
1. Safety Culture Vision: please provide the following:
a. A description of your safety culture vision,
b. Strategies for implementing it, and
c. Criteria for evaluating how well you are achieving it.
A description of the cultural leadership model which you believe would work best in your organization:
- It's Just Common Sense
- Procedure is The Key
- We do What Makes Sense, and/or
- It's Our Way of Life
Note: Refer to the readings, discussion, and activities for Topic 1, Unit 6.
3. A brief recruitment, orientation, and training package that supports your vision of the safety culture in your chosen organization.
Part B: Reflective Summary
Instructions
- The Reflective Summary requires you to reflect on your learning experience in online discussions and journalling. As an online learner, much of your interaction in this course may have come from participation in the online discussions. Consider the following reflective questions:
1. Did the contribution of other learners influence you and help enrich your knowledge of occupational health and safety?
2. Did the ideas and information presented in the readings have a significant influence on your understanding, responsibilities, or perspective on occupational health and safety legislation and standards?
- Write three to four pages (roughly 1,000 words) reviewing your contribution to the discussions and journalling activity in the course. Include the reflective questions listed above and your answers to them. Document your best contribution to the discussions and describe briefly what you have learned from the postings of other learners. Include highlights from other activities and the course in general.
Note
The work you have done throughout the course in learning activities and assignments may be compiled, if you wish, into a personal portfolio that demonstrates your ability to compose a comprehensive occupational health and safety program. You may choose to use this in your present occupation or in the future.
