1. How does HIV make people sick? How is HIV diagnosed? What are the most common oral diseases (bacterial, fungal, and viral) in patients with HIV? How is HIV treated? If you are exposed to blood from a patient with HIV what is your risk of infection and what could be done to prevent infection? Has anyone ever been cured of HIV? If so, how?

2. What are the signs and symptoms of HBV infection? When does HBV cause acute or chronic infections? What complications can occur from these infections? Which body fluids contain HBV? What is the risk of infection from exposure to fluids from an HBV+ patient? Discuss whether or not this virus has ever been transmitted in a dental setting. What can be done to prevent HBV infection? How effective are these prevention strategies?

3. Describe the signs and symptoms of diseases are caused by varicella-zoster virus. What complications can occur in patients with VZV infections? How is VZV transmitted? How can disease caused by VZV be prevented and/or managed? Should a hygienist suffering from zoster provide care to patients? If so, what can be done to prevent transmission?

4. What diseases are caused by different strains of HPV? How (molecularly) does HPV cause cancer? Which viral proteins are involved with oncogenesis? What are the risks and benefits of HPV vaccination? What are the differences in risk factors and location of HPV+ and HPV- head and neck cancers? What can hygienists do to help prevent HPV-associated disease?

5. What diseases are caused by herpes simplex viruses in different sites of the body? What does it mean if someone is seropositive for HSV-1 or HSV-2? What drugs are available to treat these viruses and how do they work? Should you treat patients with presenting with herpes labialis? Why or why not?

6. Describe the disease caused by parvovirus B19. How does this virus cause disease? When and how is this virus transmitted? Which patients are at the greatest risk of complications from this infection? Is it safe for pregnant females to treat patients with these infections? If so, when or under what circumstances?

7. What happens when a person is infected with Zika virus? What ways can this virus be transmitted? Where are Zika virus infections occurring this year? What complications have been described in patients that have been infected with Zika virus?

8. Do dental hygienists have an increased risk of being infected by viruses that infect the respiratory tract? Describe four viruses that cause infections of the upper respiratory tract. What complications can these viruses cause? What can be done to lower the risk of infections by these pathogens?
