Problem
Film - Selma.
A. MLK gives a speech accepting the Nobel Peace Prize near the start of the film. The flimmakers juxtapose this scene against a tragic historic event. What happened in that tragic scene (regardless if you know the actual event, you can answer this; just describe what occurred.)
B. In the scene where a character (portrayed by Oprah Winfrey) tries to register to vote, she is asked two "test" questions before being permitted to register. Name the "test question" she could not answer.
C. In the early scene in which President Johnson meets with "J. Edgar," how does J. Edgar describe King? (You may not know this, but that character is J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI Director at the time).
D. When MLK leads the protest at the Selma courthouse, (where we see the law enforcement officers attack an older man). What are they there to do?
E. Although President Johnson did sign important civil rights legislation, there are also indications he was not as proactive in advancing civil rights as he could have been. Provide at least one example from the film that suggests this. There are several scenes in the film that can help inform your answer.
F. In a scene involving a protest at night, a young male protestor, Jimmy Lee Jackson, and his parents rush to a diner to take cover from the police. What happens to Jimmy when the police arrive?
G. In a scene immediately preceding the first march on Selma, a group is seeing pulling straws, and we see one character draws the short straw. What did that mean he had to do? (see the very next scene for the answer.)
H. The film does an excellent job of showing us the personal side of Dr. King. It's always interesting to see this perspective on famous figures. What was your favorite, or perhaps most surprising thing that you learned (and that you hadn't previously known) about what MLK was like as a person?
I. In what city does the march end?
J. What was your most important "takeaway" (the most valuable thing that you learned) from this film?
