Regression Since regression is such a widely used statistical method lets revisit the topic now that we have statistical inference tools. We will use confidence intervals and hypothesis tests to determine if the relationship between two quantitative variables has occurred by chance alone. Any ideas on how she might do this? She hopes predicting volume of wood from tree diameter for individual trees will help determine total volume for the piece of forest land. She investigates, "Can the volume of wood for a tree be predicted by its diameter?" First she randomly samples 31 trees and measures the diameter of each tree and then its volume. Is the relationship linear? Now we compute the slope and the intercept for least squares regression line. What would happen if the forest service agent took another sample of 31 trees? Would the slope change? Would the intercept change? What about a third sample of 31 trees?
Indicate which of the following responses below is correct. Discuss why it is correct or discuss why standard deviation is such a valuable statistic in so many situations.
You are asked to conduct a study to determine if gender has any bearing on the choice of a dog or cat as a pet. You take a random sample of 350 adults and ask each what kind of pet they would prefer, a dog or a cat?

The resulting equation for the line of best fit is given below, with x being observed for values between 10 and 200. If a production run was scheduled to produce 80 units, what would you predict the cost per unit to be in dollars?
suppose you want to test the claim that mu!=3.5 with standard deviation unknown. Given a sample size of n = 40 and a level of significance of alpha=.05, when should you reject H0.
Collapse the response categories in the following tables so that it meets the assumptions of the chi-square test; than perform the test.

What is the critical F value for a sample of four observations in the numerator and seven in the denominator? Use a one-tailed test and the .01 significance level.
Discuss the properties of a normal distribution. Why are there infinite possible normal distributions? Why should one assume that sample data represents a population distribution?
Suppose you are given the following estimated regression equation: Debt Ratio = 4000 + .20 Cash Flow. If the t-stat for the slope estimate is 3.25, what can you conclude?
What is the probability that a soldier is a female?
Suppose a certain brand of Westinghouse light bulbs has a population life expectancy of 3000 and a population standard deviation equal to 100. (Assume the distribution of the population is normal). What is the probability that a sample of 30 light..
