Question: A researcher wants to know if those who consume alcohol are more extroverted (i.e., talkative, friendly, upbeat, full of energy/walking around and smiling) than those who do not consume alcohol. Specifically, is it just the thought of consuming alcoholic that makes people more extroverted or not (i.e., a placebo effect). The researcher gives participants in room 1, three 8 oz glasses of alcohol in 1 hour. The researcher gives participants in room 2, three 8 oz glasses of a non-alcoholic drink that tastes and smells like alcohol. Neither the participants in room 1 or 2 know if they are consuming alcohol or not, only the researcher knows who received the alcohol and who received the placebo. The researcher watches both groups for two hours and writes down any behavior that is considered extroverted. The results from the study show that both groups demonstrate more extroverted behavior whether they got the alcohol or the non-alcoholic drink (i.e., the placebo).
