You are designing an underwater maintenance schedule for an offshore oil rig. The divers work at a depth of 15 m and the seawater density is 1027 kg m-3. They are known to consume 130 litres of air at the ambient temperature is 10oC over the time taken to do the job. Atmospheric pressure is 101325 Pa. Each full SCUBA diving tank contains 3 kg of air. What fraction of the tank air mass will be consumed on each job?

Find what is the future worth at 15 years of the investment

general price inflation is estimated to be 3% for the next 5 years, 5% the 5 years after that, and 8% the following five years. If you invest $10,000 at the market rate of 10% for those 15 years,

What is the additional weight of water per unit volume

A Proctor compaction test in the laboratory on a borrow pit soil gives a maximum dry unit weight of 19 kN/m3 and optimum water content of 11.5%. The bulk unit weight and water content of the soil in the borrow pit are 17.2 kN/m3

What is the 2-4-6-trichlorophenol concentration in ppm

A 500 L (132 gal) tank contains 255 mg/L 2,4,6-trichlorophenol dissolved in trichloroethylene (TCE). What is the 2,4,6-trichlorophenol concentration in ppm Assume the temperature of the system is 20 degrees C.

Determine the velocity of the solid sphere

A solid steel sphere with a specific gravity of 7.85 and diameter of 0.02 m is falling at its terminal velocity through water at 25 °C. Using either trial-and-error or a graphical approach, determine the velocity of the sphere

How much volume has to be excavated from the borrow pit to

A soil sample taken from a borrow pit has a natural void ratio of1.15. The soil will be used for a highway project where a total of 100,000 m3 of soil is needed in itscompacted state; its compacted void ratio is 0.73.

Design a horizontal curve with a 40-degree central angle (delta=40) for a two-lane road with 11-ft lanes. The design speed is 70 mi/h and superelevation is limited to 0.06ft/ft. Give radius, degree of curvature, and length of curve

Calculate how high will the liquid rise in the small tube

A weightless piston is placed on the liquid surface and the water level stabilizes (also in the small tube) to a level of h. Next, a weight of 10 kg is placed on the piston causing the liquid in the small tube to rise.

Derive formulas to show that normal stresses in rods

Derive formulas to show that normal stresses in rods (1) and (2) are independent of the material used in rods, as long as they have the same modulus of elasticity, that is, E_1 = E_2.

Determine speed of block after it has compressed the spring

a 20 kg block slides along the rough surface for which the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.2. The block strikes a nonlinear spring with a speed of v=4.5 m/s. The spring is termed "nonlinear" because it has resistance of Fs=ks^2
