Lab 9: Deliverable
1. What is the main focus of your maps and who is the audience? In your answer, state the central question, problem, use, or issue your map will be intended to address.
2. What are some of the social dimensions of the data that you will use? Why is the topic you chose significant, and to whom? What are the possible political, social or economic implications of your map for particular groups or individuals?
3. What specific data categories are you using?
4. Describe your data. How did the data provider collect the data, organize it, and define the data attributes for your use? (In the case of census data, please focus on addressing the data that you will map rather than explaining how the census generally works.) If you are using data gathered over time, have the underlying questions or methods change?
Lab 10: Deliverable
1. In one or two sentences, state the central question, problem, use, or issue your map addresses.
2. What forms of symbolization did you employ and why? Social Explorer limits your choices more than full-fledged cartographic software does, but discuss at least two of the choices that you were able to make.
3. What kinds of simplification did you or Social Explorer apply to your data in terms of resolution and classification?
4. What type of analysis did you perform? Describe why you chose this approach and how it relates to the main point or focus of your map.
5. What did you determine through your analysis? Describe your findings and conclusions concerning the central focus of the project. Note any additional factors that may be influencing the relationship you're examining, but which were not included in the map. Make reference to specific figures or portions of your map to support your conclusions. Finally, recall that correlation is not causation. Many social issues are very complicated and do not lend themselves to easy answers. Limit your answers to what you can see in your maps and link to your supporting information.
6. Describe one social aspect of your map. This may relate to any aspect of your map. Be sure to go back to the lab assignment and revisit the kinds of questions you want to consider for this question, and then go into some depth when answering. This is a good place to cite to the course readings.
7. Insert your maps below, one map per page. As in past labs, your figures will be assessed for the quality of the maps themselves, as well as the neatness and clarity of the presentation (including clear titles, citations, legends, etc.).
