Homework: Psychology
Rationale: The purpose of this paper is to assess your understanding of the logic of experimental designs.
Instructions: For this homework, you will complete a brief (~ 1.5-2 pages) paper, as described below. Begin by choosing from the 6 hypotheses listed below. You will have the opportunity to redo the paper if you are not satisfied with the grade you earned on your first submission. However, you MUST select a different hypothesis and design a different experiment. You are strongly encouraged to contact me to discuss your research design prior to resubmitting your paper in Module 8. If you are satisfied with your grade on the first submission, you do not need to do a second paper. You may elect to have your first submission grade carry over and be duplicated in Module 8.
For your paper, chose one of these 6 hypotheses:
People in noisy environments are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, anxiety, and feelings of helplessness.
Witnesses of simulated crime scenes remember less information if the "robber" has a gun than if he/she does not.
People in a bar will be more likely to leave the bartender a tip if the tip jar already has some money in it.
Single, elderly individuals are happier if they have a pet.
Most people who suffer from psychological problems become better with therapy.
Sleep-deprived students are more likely to get lower grades on tests.
Notice that each of the six hypotheses could be either supported by empirical evidence or proven false. Again, the purpose of this homework is to assess your understanding of experimental (NOT a correlational study, a survey, or any other type of research) design. So you need to design an experiment to test your chosen hypothesis. Also, note that you will not actually have to conduct the research, so don't worry about expenses when designing the experiment. Be as specific as possible in your descriptions. Papers will be graded on the accuracy and depth of the information provided (see the Rubric associated with the homework). Keep in mind that this is a paper and it should be written with full sentences and paragraphs. Do not turn in a bullet-point list of your answers to the questions provided below. Your paper must describe the following elements:
1. Participants/ Sample
2. Who would they be?
3. How would you select/recruit them?
4. How will they be assigned to the groups in your study? (review the sampling technique video in Module 1)
Independent variable
1. What is it?
2. How are you going to manipulate it? (How are you operationally defining it? You must manipulate it in an experiment. If you just measure it, then you've designed a correlational study).
3. What factors will you have to control?
4. What will happen in the experimental group(s)?
5. What will happen in the control group?
Dependent Variable(s)
1. What is it/ are they?
2. How will you measure it/them? (How are you operationally defining it?)
Results
1. What would the results look like if the chosen hypothesis was supported?
2. What would the results look like if the chosen hypothesis was disproved?
