Instructions:
Part I: "BAD COP":
Find a video clip online of real-life policing that involves an officer acting unprofessionally ("Bad Cop"). This may include rudeness, violating the law or department policy, excessive use of force, losing control of their emotions and unnecessarily escalating the situation, and/or abusing citizens' rights in some way, etc.
The video must be no longer than five minutes.
For the first video, attach a link to the video in your post and discuss your case to share your thoughts with the rest of the class. Answer the following questions based on your interpretation of the video:
Question A. What factors lead to the unprofessional behavior? What did the citizen(s) do? How did the officer initially approach the citizen(s)? Why did the situation escalate?
Question B. What role did the officer's and citizens' emotional states play in this situation? What mitigating factors can you identify that justify or possibly excuse the officer's behavior? What aggravating factors can you identify that suggest the officer contributed to the escalation of the incident?
Question C. What disciplinary action, if any, should be taken against the officer? Provide specific evidence and examples from the video to support and defend your conclusions.
Question D. What suggestions can you offer for improving laws, departmental policies, police training, and/or public awareness to help prevent similar situations in the future?
Part II: "GOOD COP":
Find a video clip online of real-life policing that involves an officer acting professionally ("Good Cop"). This may include calmness, courtesy, proper use of force and authority, respect for citizens' rights, peaceful negotiation, etc.
The video must be no longer than five minutes.
For the second video, attach a link to the video and discuss your case to share your thoughts with the rest of the class. Answer the following questions based on your interpretation of the video:
Question A. What personality qualities and attributes led to the officer acting professionally? How did the officer's approach prevent the situation from escalating or from other potentially negative outcomes?
Question B. What suggestions can you offer for improving laws, departmental policies, police training, and public awareness to encourage all officers to follow in this officer's example?
