In the News: India is complex in that there are stark contrasts to its economy and day-to-day life for many of its citizens.
There has been tremendous economic growth in recent decades as India became a manufacturing powerhouse. However, it is plagued by corruption, illiteracy, a failing education system, inadequate sanitation, and extreme poverty.
The Pandemic, therefore, greatly impacted India because of these largely unsolved problems. This resulted in a substantial economic downturn in 20-21. Recovery has been slow because Covid dies down and then starts up again, moving from region to region.
A recent WSJ article "India Struggles with Urban Exodus" 2/13/2022 talks of how low-paid workers fled the cities to avoid the Covid spread and are not returning. This is a drag on economic recovery.
Approximately 75 million people in India will have fallen into extreme poverty in 2020.
India currency= the rupee. $1 is worth approximately 79.91 rupees. Many workers in India make the equivalent of $1 to $4 a day.
