Assignment Background
Slums are informal settlements around an urban core. While slums provide cheap labor that is essential for a city to thrive, they also are considered to be problematic and a serious humanitarian concern. In Latin America, about 25-40% of the entire population reside in slums.
For this activity, you will conduct virtual fieldwork to understand the characteristics of Latin American slums that we have gone over in our Module 8 lecture. More specifically, we will explore the largest slum (favela) in Brazil: Rocinha.
Task
Think about the following questions while you are exploring Rocinha: What is your very first impression of this neighborhood? Closely examine the buildings, fixtures, architectural styles, signs, people, transportation, etc. What can you infer about this neighborhood's past, present, and future? When comparing Rocinha with other lower-income neighborhoods in the United States or elsewhere, what is similar and what is different?
What did you see when exploring Rocinha?
What factors have contributed to the living conditions of Rio's favelas?
What are the favelas' citizens like? Do you see them as "innovative, creative, and transformative"?
Conclude with what you have learned overall from this activity. What was surprising and new to you?
Do not forget to include at least one screenshot of the Rocinha neighborhood. Please make sure to cover what what you have learned about the favelas in Brazil in general and about Rocinha more specifically in your response.
This assignment will be graded based on:
Content knowledge: a grasp of the Rocinha is demonstrated and an effort to understand the Rio's favelas is shown based on the information from the article
Critical thinking: a level of critical analysis and understanding is illustrated in regard to the discussion questions; the answers provided are based on knowledge from lecture, the Vox video (found on Canvas), the virtual fieldwork through Google Earth, and/or the assigned article
