Joan is an Emergency Room nurse at Toronto General Hospital. She has worked for a night shift for two years. Almost every month, she had to work a couple of more hours when her shift ended due to the high demand in the Emergency Room. Three months ago, a new supervisor, Sandy, was hired. Joan does not know what Sandy expects because Sandy has never clarified it. Even when Joan asked Sandy to clarify job expectation, Sandy told her to do whatever she used to do. This leadership style has made Joan very uncomfortable. Lately, Joan has been worried about her own well-being. She has been abrupt with her coworkers on several occasions and therefore feels lonely. Though there have been no problems to date, Joan is worried that her performance might cause her losing the job. She feels that nobody at her department could help her out, and decides to see her family doctor. The family doctor suggested that she take an extended leave because of the high level of her stress.
