Before you start, make sure that you read the article "Is Your Language Making You Broke and Fat? How Language Can Shape Thinking and Behavior (and How It Can't)" by Julie Sedivy. As you read this short article, track your reactions to the article by taking some notes.

In terms of the construction of Sedivy's essay, she carefully constructs an argument only to dismantle it in the end--in your opinion, is this approach effective? Why or why not? Finally, Sedivy makes the distinction between correlation and cause and effect. What is the importance of this distinction when discussing power and language?
