Question: To what extent do people reinvent God to satisfy psychological needs and/or to provide legitimacy to their biases? Let me explain. It is easy to find examples of actors and athletes, musicians and MMA fighters, bigots and the big-hearted; all claiming to do what they do in the name of God. Can this be so? Is God really a sports and music fan? Moreover, hate groups and those who reject hate groups both believe their faith in God supports their view. One side is probably mistaken. Or perhaps not. Perhaps religion does not cause hate or compassion; but draws out what already dwells within each person. In other words, if you are conservative by nature your religion will reflect this; if you are more liberal in your views your religion will convey this as well. Religion does not change you; you change it. You will then join a church that nurtures what you already hold dear. And in turn you will interpret God in a way that supports your beliefs. Have you ever noticed your God always supports the same views that you have? This may be why. Genesis says we were created in the image of God. Perhaps it's the other way around. Thus whenever someone quotes the Bible on an issue, the person is telling you more about their bias than what is in the Bible.
