1. A pumping well in the Livingston Field (Texas) is producing, through 2.5 in. tubing, a fluid of specific gravity of 0.92. The temperature of the produced fluid at the surface is 95 F and the approximate mean yearly surface temperature is 70 F. Pump depth is 6550 ft, plunger diameter is 1.75 in., and the working fluid level is estimated to be 6530 ft. It is decided to set a tension anchor to reduce sucker rod failures believed to result from tubing buckling. How much pickup is necessary if the anchor is set at 6600 ft when the static fluid level is 3500 ft?

2. Concerning Problem 1, what extension of tubing below the pump (as tail pipe) would be necessary to prevent buckling without use of an anchor? What extension would be necessary if compression anchor were to be set?

3. For the well of Problem 1, the total depth is 6800 ft, and it would therefore be impossible to use a tailpipe of length as great as that calculated in Prob. 26. Suppose that worn drill collars, no longer satisfactory for drilling, were available for use as tailpipe. What length of 5.5 in OD by 2.25 in ID collars (weight = 60 lb/ft) would be necessary with the compression anchor.

Note: Except where otherwise indicated, it can be assumed, in the above problems, that pump setting depth, pumping fluid level, and net lift are identical, and that tubing pressure is negligible. Also any missing data can be assumed.
