Problem: You are a human resource specialist for an accounting firm. Recently, the organization has been introducing new software to improve performance for clients. The firm created the position of Lead Trainer to oversee the training of all the internal users and client teams. Jean, from the training department, applied for this internal promotion and was declined. Randall was hired from a company that already uses the software. After Jean meets the new hire, Randall, she feels she was not chosen for the position because of her age. Jean visits you in Human Resources to voice her concern and inquire about the selection process for the role. You know that Randall has extensive experience with the software, which takes several months to learn. Randall has also led project teams and has some supervisory experience. You know Jean has good experience with training but is not as well versed with the new accounting software. Jean recently declined to join a project team that worked to understand the key differences between the existing software and the new software. Record how you would respond to Jean, and share the factors that were used to make the hiring selection. At least one suggestion to help Jean acquire experience with the new software so she could potentially be considered in the future. Acknowledge and address Jean's concerns about age discrimination.
