How Has the Academic and Public Discourse on [Gay marriage rights] Changed Over the Course of Your Lifetime?
The purpose of this assignment is to look carefully at the academic and public discourse on a focused topic over the course of your lifetime in order to describe how the conversation has evolved.
Your topic for this paper will be your semester-long topic, the topic Prof LD will approve (the Project Proposal Assignment).
Your thesis is less of an argument with which an audience will agree or disagree and more of a synthesis claim-your job as a writer is to draw conclusions about the evolution of your topic over time based on a broad array of sources.
Choose sources that are "in conversation." When the same names, events, and studies start coming up in the research, you are on the right track.
In order to identify change, you should consider the following questions:
1. What do we know now that we didn't know previously?
2. What events have influenced our understanding of the topic?
3. Who are the "major players"?-researchers and public figures who have made discoveries or influenced public opinion?
4. How has technology influenced our understanding of the topic?
5. What policy decisions, local, state, or federal laws, or publications have influenced our understanding of the topic?
You will write paper (not including works cited), which should incorporate a minimum of 12 sources. Your sources should be a balance of peer reviewed sources from the GRCC database as well as popular sources from the news and social media. Your sources for this paper should be from various points in the Information Cycle. You will be transparent with your reader about publication date, publication source, author, and author credibility when you introduce your sources. You will use quotes, paraphrase, and summary from your sources to support your claims about the evolution of the topic.
