Ethics in Another Country
Read the opening case in Weiss, Chapter 2, about Louise Simms.
What ethical systems push you in which direction? How would you respond? What ethical system do you use to decide? This gives you a chance to apply the ethical traditions discussed in this chapter:
Consequentialism, sometimes called teleology or utilitarianism
Deontology, which focuses on duties, obligations, and principles
Virtue ethics, or the focus on integrity
Questions:
Using one of the ethical traditions/theories noted above, make a brief argument for promising to give a lucrative contract to the government official's nephew. (Yes, you read that correctly.)
Using one of the other two of the ethical traditions/theories noted above (excluding the one you used to answer Question 1), make a brief argument against promising to give a lucrative contract to the government official's nephew.
What would you choose, and why? Use any of the three philosophical paradigms, or even just appeal to self-interest, in explaining.
