Assignment:

The following scenarios come from a scenario-based workbook that is used in police officer training. For each scenario I would like you to answer the following questions:

1. What should the officer do in this situation, and why?

  1. Be specific - Give specific examples from our text/course material to support your assertion.
  2. In addition, you should bold or highlight at least 2 key terms/concepts that apply to this (from the Section 2 policing material).

2. What ethical system (Utilitarianism, Deontology, Peacemaking) does that decision fall under?

  1. Be specific with this - Give specific examples from our text/course material to support your assertion.
  2. In addition, you should bold or highlight at least 2 key terms/concepts that apply to this (From the Section 1 Deontology/Utilitarianism/Peacemaking course material).

NOTE: In your application portion of the situation, be sure to both a) define a term/concept completely before you apply it, and b) tell me specifically how it applies in the situation. For example, if "hedonistic calculus" is a term you are using in the scenario, be sure to a) tell me what the hedonistic calculus is in enough detail, so I know you know what it means, and b) tell me specifically how it applies to the scenario. You should be using different terms for each scenario, meaning one you apply one term, you cannot apply the same term again in a different scenario.

Please be sure to number your responses (i.e., 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B)

Scenario 1) For the past several months, you have been stopping by the same convenience store in your new patrol area to purchase gum, soda, and chips. Last week, a new owner purchased the store. During one of your work breaks, you walk in and the new owner says, "Officer, how nice to see you. Feel free to help yourself to anything you want. You guys do one heck of a good job."

Scenario 2) You are an off-duty officer who has just completed a three-mile run. You decide to cool off and rest under a big oak tree. You sit down under the tree and see a brown leather wallet close by. Curiosity gets the best of you and you open the wallet. Interestingly, you find credit cards, and ID card, and $300 in cash. Nobody else is around.

Scenario 3) During your morning shift, you observe a motorist traveling 30-mph in a 15-mph school zone. You stop the vehicle, and the motorist immediately identifies himself as a corrections officer from the county. You recognize him because his son plays on the same baseball team as your son.
