Assignment: School Observation Analysis

Background

The next step in this Family Engagement Plan is to observe the school where you are currently working in order to identify what the school climate is regarding parental involvement and family engagement. Several protocols have been published by various entities, such as the U.S. Department of Education (ED School Climate Surveys) and California State University, Los Angeles (School Climate Assessment Instrument). For this assignment, we will be using the latter. As you analyze the results from this observation protocol as well as those obtained from the Parent Survey, think of the content covered in this Course Objective and how it connects to your current school setting.

Directions

I. Complete all components of Course Objective #2 (i.e., Monday-Wednesday, Thursday-Saturday).

II. Observation Protocol

A. Download one of the following observation protocols:

1. Elementary setting (PK-5)Download Elementary setting (PK-5)

2. Secondary setting (6-12)Download Secondary setting (6-12)

B. Complete your selected observation protocol.

III. Observation Analysis

A. Compare the results obtained from the Parent Survey completed in Course Objective #1 with the results obtained from the Observation Protocol completed in Course Objective #2.

IV. Write a critical reflection of your analysis by including the following sections:

A. Description of the two protocols (Parent Survey, School Observation).

1. When were they administered/completed?

2. What were the results?

3. What else happened that might be important?

B. Examination of what was learned on parental involvement and family engagement from the following two perspectives:

1. Family Diversity

a. Demographics

i. What does the national data say in regards to the demographic makeup of children both with and without disabilities? (Hint: Review 2.1.F - Demographics)?

ii. How might the results from the observation protocol "Section 8. School-Community Relations" compare with the results obtained from the Parent Survey?

iii. What conclusions can be drawn in terms of school demographics and the results obtained from the two protocols as it relates to your school setting?

b. Definitions of Family

i. What are some of the current thoughts on the definitions of family? (Hint: Review 2.1.G - Defining Family)?

ii. How might the results from the observation protocol "Section 3. Student Interactions" and "Section 7. Attitude and Culture" compare with the results obtained from the Parent Survey?

iii. What conclusions can be drawn in terms of family definitions and the results obtained from the two protocols as it relates to your school setting?

2. Cultural Competence

a. Cultural Perceptions

i. What are some cultural perceptions that people have? (Hint: Review 2.2.D - Cultural Perceptions)?

ii. How might the results from the observation protocol "Section 5. Discipline Environment" and "Section 6. Learning Environment" compare with the results obtained from the Parent Survey?

iii. What conclusions can be drawn in terms of cultural perceptions and the results obtained from the two protocols as it relates to your school setting?

b. Cultural Self-Awareness

i. What are your assumptions regarding various cultures? (Hint: Review 2.2.E - Cultural Self-Awareness)?

ii. How might the results from the observation protocol "Section 1. Appearance and Physical Plant", "Section 2. Faculty Relations", and "Section 34. Leadership/Decision Making" compare with results obtained from the Parent Survey?

iii. What conclusions can be drawn in terms of cultural self-awareness and the results obtained from the two protocols as it relates to your school setting?

c. Cultural Perceptions of Disabilities

i. What are some of the perceptions of children with disabilities? (Hint: Review 2.2.F - Cultural Perceptions of Disabilities)?

ii. How might the results from the observation protocol "Section 3. Student Interactions" compare with results obtained from the Parent Survey?

iii. What conclusions an be drawn in terms of cultural perceptions of disabilities and the results obtained from the two protocols as it relates to your school setting?
