Assessment task : Developing language awareness
Question A CHOICE OF TEXT
Explain why you have chosen this text. For example: -Why does the topic of the text interest you? -What effect does the text have on you as a reader? -Does the text have any interesting (patterns of) language features?
Question B LANGUAGE AWARENESS
Analyse the chosen text.
a.Identify the genre and register of the text.
b.Provide a DETAILED analysis of the text in terms of ONE of the following language systems: (you can xeplain the definition first) •tense/aspect (i.e. all the tenses/aspects in the text) OR •interpersonal meanings (i.e. modality, mood AND/OR appraisal) OR •grammatical cohesion (i.e. reference chains, substitution, ellipsis and conjunctions) OR •lexical cohesion (i.e. lexical relationships)
c. Discuss the speakers(s)/writer(s) choices of the specific features identified in
b. Why do you think the writer has made these choices? What effects do they have on the reader? You may also discuss other aspects of the speaker(s)/writer(s) language use.
Question C TEACHING
a.Could this text be used in the English language classroom? Why or why not?
b.If so, for what kind(s) of learners? For what purpose(s)? If not, explain in detail the content or language that makes this text unsuitable for use in the classroom. Consider also whether the text be changed or adapted to make it suitable for learners and, if so, how?
Advice 1.The text you choose must be authentic. It cannot come from a language course book, from any other book that has been written for language teaching purposes, or from a language teaching website.
2.The source of the text needs to be given fully and correctly in either the actual assignment or in the appendix - not in the reference list.
3.In the appendix, both a clean copy of the original text needs to be provided (including visual images), as well as a transcription of the text with line numbers.
4.At least 6 references is a good number of references for this assignment. Use academic literature in part B to define terms such as genre and register and/or to discuss the writer's choice of features. Use of literature in part C is less important, but could possibly be used to support teaching choices.
5.Any teaching ideas that you give should not be too complicated or theoretical. It is NOT appropriate to say that you would ask your learners to analyse the text like you have analysed it in Part B.
