Assignment - Community Health Needs Discussion
Description - Dq1.- We all have "identity categories," such as our educational background, region where we reside, ethnicity, gender, family structure, disability status, age, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and race. Describe how your identity categories may shape your attitudes and perspectives. What are things you do or could do to broaden your personal perspectives, and understand your students with backgrounds that are different from yours?
Dq2.- What is the difference between assimilation and acculturation? What is your opinion of both? Which do you think should be the expectation for immigrant and migrant students? Explain your answer.
Dq3.- How does the United States compare to other countries in the support and resources devoted to early childhood education? In what ways could educators help the situation?
Dq4.- Describe the community in which you were raised. How did your family connect with others in the community? In what types of community activities and organization did you and your family participate? What kind of learning opportunities and supports were provided to you? In your opinion, was your experience typical? Why or why not?
Assignment 1 - Effects of Teacher Efforts Case Study
Many times, teachers are given the curriculum materials from the district or administration. Understanding the cultural dynamics of your classroom may require modifications to the curriculum materials in order to best meet the needs of all learners.
Review the following case study to inform the assignment that follows:
Ruben Gonzalez is a kindergarten teacher in a culturally diverse Title 1 school. The students in his classroom are of diverse backgrounds and include African American, Latino, Vietnamese, and White students. Some of the students are children of migrant farm workers, and many others have parents in other working class jobs, often working more than one job.
He has noticed that the curriculum adopted by the district does not adequately address cultural diversity. With this in mind, Mr. Gonzalez would like to try some strategies and activities he learned from previous conferences on effective teaching practices. He believes these strategies would enable students to embrace their cultural differences, and thus the needs of culturally diverse students could be more easily met. He has also researched current literature in the field for effective strategies for teaching students from diverse cultures.
Mr. Gonzalez decided to implement strategies during his lessons and plan activities that would encourage students to work together and share information about themselves. In addition, he decided to plan some activities during math and language arts that would showcase students' family traditions and culture. Finally, Mr. Gonzalez posted these projects in the classroom prior to parent-teacher conferences so that the students could show their parents their projects.
Write a 750-1,000 word analysis of the case study. Address the following:
1. What effect might the teacher's efforts have on the students, their families, or other staff at the school?
2. How can families and other community members be included in order to help develop reciprocal relationships?
3. What are 3-4 strategies that a teacher could implement to embrace the diverse cultures and backgrounds that are represented at school and in the community?
4. How could a teacher approach curricular changes with the administration, keeping in mind the needs of the students?
Support your analysis with 2-3 scholarly resources.
Assignment 2 - Community Partnership Model Analysis
Schools can greatly benefit from partnerships with business and organizations in the communities. It is important to understand how to purposefully network and develop working relationships with community partners as they can assist in supporting better student outcomes as well as providing quality resources outside of the classroom for families.
For this assignment, begin to research school/district (in Chicago) partnership models that have made gains in student outcomes. Often, these successful models are the results of grants or federal or state funding and are described in websites with .org or .gov in their URL. Select one such model that you think could be successful for the grade level that you want to teach and describe that model in a 750-1,000 word analysis. Include the following:
1. A detailed description of the community partnership model.
2. How the model utilizes multiple perspectives and is sensitive to cultural diversity and diverse backgrounds of students.
3. How the model has been successful in improving student outcomes.
4. How the model promotes respectful, reciprocal relationships with families.
5. How the community partnership seeks input from students, educators, families, and the larger community for implementation and improvement.
Support your response with 2-3 research-based sources that support the model. (These may be provided by the partnership website.)
