Assignment:

What effect did the spread of railways have on local communities? They offered faster transport but ruined towns that happened to be left off the lines. They represented a return to old-world values. They had almost no impact on local communities until the middle of the twentieth century. They created a sub-culture of "railies" (young men who worked as train engineers). They created new jobs for women, who were seen as the most qualified for operating trains.
