Assignment: After reading Linda Brady's "I Want a Wife", do the following:

  1. List all the job titles (at least 5) that Linda Brady describes as duties of a wife in "I Want a Wife," Quote Brady's description of the job, and give a job title for that description. For example: She wrote: "I want a wife to take care of my children." The job title is "babysitter."
  2. Choose one of the following topics, and write about your imaginative husband or wife:
  • (For male students) Imagine that you want to write an essay titled "I Want a Husband. " List the roles you would want your husband to do.
  • (For female students) Imagine that you want to write an essay titled "I Want a Wife. " List the roles you would want your wife to do.

3. Research about gender roles in marriage and parenting in the early twenty-first century, discuss (a) how much has changed since Brady  wrote in 1970? (b) What duties and tasks are expected of wives and husbands today? (c) Are mothers or fathers better or worse than they were four decades ago?
