Essay #1: Durkheim
Review Durkheim's ideas on pages 102-106 of Pals (see pdf file). Then explain Durkheim's theory of religion, using the following quote from page 106:
A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forgidden - beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them.
As you explain this statement, try to be as clear as you can about what Durkheim is saying. You will need to defined certain terms like "sacred" in the way that Durkheim discusses them.
Essay #2: Geertz
Review Geertz's ideas in his essay, "Religion as a Cultural System" on pages 347-362. Then explain his theory of religion, using the following quote from page 349:
A religion is (1) a system of symbols which acts to (2) establish powerful, persuasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men [humans] by (3) formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and (4) clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that (5) the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic.
As you explain this statement, try to be as clear as you can about what Geertz is saying. You will need to defined certain terms like "moods" in the way that Geertz discusses them.
