Assignment:

Criminology involves (among other things) the study of WHY people commit crime. In the past two years we have seen a huge rise in violent crime throughout our cities. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot went so far as to say that it can no longer be handled at the local level, that federal help is required to resolve the violence (this in and of itself is controversial, so feel free to deposit an opinion on this here). Primarily though this week's discussion involves two questions:

1. To what do you attribute this dramatic rise in crime?

2. What drives criminal behavior in general? In other words, why do people commit crimes in the first place?

I am not talking here about a hungry person stealing a loaf of bread. I am talking about incidents like what we are seeing right now in Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and Portland - gang activity that is out of control, random beatings, daytime shootings, car jackings, etc.
