There is often no single best way of competing in an industry. The important thing for managers is: (a) to know what their business-level strategy is, (b) to have a clear logic for pursuing that strategy, (c) to have an offering that matches their strategy, and (d) to align the functional activities and organization arrangements of the company with that strategy, so the strategy is well executed. With this in mind, consider the business-level strategies presented in Strategy in Action 5.2: Microsoft Office versus Google Apps (Hill et al., 2017, p. 158). Although the source of this case is dated 2012, Microsoft and Google Apps continue to compete to offer the best cloud-based Office suite. Based on both observation and valid data research, what does this landscape look like today? What must each company must do to emerge (or continue to emerge) as the leader in the market?
