Case Study: Neutral red is an acid-base indicator that is pink in acidic solutions and yellow in basic solutions. The cytoplasm of yeast cells is normally acidic and the yeast cell membrane is permeable to neutral red. NH4OH (a base) was added to a yeast suspension containing neutral red and then this mixture was filtered and the results seen in the following diagram were obtained.

Questions:

a) What does this experiment indicate about the permeability of the yeast cell membrane to NH4OH? Explain your answer.

b) If the mixture had been heated for 10 minutes prior to filtering, would the results differ and why?
