THE ACID DISSOCIATION CONSTANT OF METHYL RED
QUESTIONS:
1. In the second part of the experiment, why did we dilute the methyl red solutions with hydrochloric acid (or sodium acetate)? What would have happened if we would have diluted them with water?
2. What are the units for molar absorptivity? Briefly define and discuss each term in Beer's Law: A, g, b, and c.
3. What does the term spectroscopy mean?
4. The literature value for the pKa of methyl red is 5.05. Does your pK, value agree with the reported value? If not, why do you think you may have obtained a different value? List specific experimental or human errors that may have occurred. Note that human errors that are easily fixable (i.e., spilled solution, incorrectly measured, error in calculations) should not be stated.

Explain why a hydroxyl group in the para position (p-hydroxybenzoic acid, pKa=4.48) decreases the acidity while a hydroxyl group in the meta position (m-hydroxybenzoic acid, pKa=4.07) increases the acidity relative to benzoic acid (pKa=4.19).
