Aim: Exploring the themes covered in the module regarding the role of English in education globally and relating this to the theoretical and/or practical implications for education
Choose ONE of the following topics:
1. In English-medium instruction English is often positioned as either a "tool" towards learning content or a "target" in itself. Discuss the usefulness or lack thereof in this dichotomy using specific cases to illustrate your points and relate your discussion to implications for (language) teaching in EMI.
2. What does the ‘E' in EMI mean? Create your own argument by drawing from the relevant literature, identifying the main positions of scholars in the field, and justifying how you position yourself in this conceptual debate. Discuss the pedagogical implications of your informed view.
3. Many teachers report that they change their pedagogic practices when transitioning into teaching through English as a medium of instruction. Based on previous studies, discuss the pedagogical implications that teaching through EMI would entail, including concrete examples. You may wish to narrow down your topic to a specific context or the teaching of a particular subject.
4. While there is a general trend towards an increase in English Medium Instruction, both at school and university, there are discussions about the groups of students (and other agents) who might be disadvantaged by such an educational practice. Discuss the potential negative impact of EMI.
