Read the attached primary sources from the Texas Revolution of 1835 - 1836. Primary Source 1 is a letter from the government of Texas to the Mexican people during the Revolution. Primary Source 2 is an excerpt from a writing by Benjamin Lundy against the pro-slavery implications of the Texas Revolution. When reading Primary Source 2, remember that Mexico had outlawed slavery.
Both sources attempt to state the reasons for the Texas Revolution.
After reading, answer the following questions
1: In Primary Source 1, how does the Texan government try to portray the revolution (what words and symbolism do they use to justify their revolution)?
2: What do you think Primary Source 1 means when it says "every free man would have done the same who appreciated his dignity and was able to resist slavery?" (remember, most of these men were slaveholders)

4: What is the overall purpose of Primary Source 1? Why do you think it was it written?
5: What do you think is the purpose of Primary Source 2? Why do you think it was written?
6: What does the author say is the actual reason for the Texas Revolution in Primary Source 2? - offer specific examples.
7: Do you think either sources contain biases? Remember, Primary Source 1 was written by the revolutionary Texan Government, while Primary Source 2 was written by an American abolitionist.
7: Which interpretation to you believe, Primary Source 1 or Primary Source 2, why?
