You are on the ill-fated cruise liner the Titanic. You are an extremely wealthy heir/heiress to a stockbroker who is enjoying a luxurious first-class cruise. You are dining on some of the finest steak and seafood and drinking an assortment of fine wines. When you hear that the ship struck an iceberg and was going to sink, you see the crew frantically trying to get the first-class and second-class passengers to lifeboats, but the third-class passengers are being barred from boarding. Why might the crew try to give preference to first-class and second-class passengers while preventing the third-class passengers from boarding lifeboats? What does that say about the role of wealth and status in our society?
