Socioeconomic Status Assignment 1 -

The purpose of this assignment is for you to reflect on how you are personally affected by socioeconomic status (SES). In this assignment you will put together everything you've learned in this lesson about the various factors that affect who someone is and how they become that person.

Write an autobiography, but not just any autobiography--your socioeconomic autobiography. The main idea of your autobiography is to explain how you decided to go into the field of health care and what has made you the person you are today.

Your paper should be at least 500 words in length, double-spaced, and have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You may use your textbook and other reliable sources as references.

Tell your life story, where you came from, how you got where you are, etc. using the socioeconomic concepts covered in this lesson to explain your life.

Concepts should include the following:

• Social class
• Status
• Lifestyle
• Locations where you have lived
• Opportunities and/or the lack of opportunities
• Gender
• Race/ethnicity
• Anything else relevant to who you are

Be sure to answer these questions in your socioeconomic autobiography:

• What does socioeconomic status mean to you?
• What do you perceive your status to be at this time? What was the status of your family when you were a child?
• How did socioeconomic status impact your educational experiences in elementary school, high school, and beyond?
• How did factors of ethnicity and gender enter into your experience and life choices?
• How does your experience compare to that of your siblings, your friends, or to others in the neighborhood(s) in which you grew up?
• How do these socioeconomic variables contribute to who you are today?
• Do you feel you would be a different person if any or all of these variables were changed?
• Which variables and specific events in your life resulted in your decision to work in health care?
• How can understanding the impact of SES on your personal life help you better understand the lifestyle and healthcare choices made by your patients?

Deductive Argument Assignment 2 -

This assignment has two parts. Make sure you complete both parts for full credit.

Part 1: Complete the following deductive arguments by filling in the conclusion.

P: Celtic fans hate the Lakers.

P: Nancy loves the Celtics.

Part 2: Write four deductive arguments of your own, including the premises and conclusions. Please make the form valid and the conclusion sound. You can format them as classic syllogisms, or you may use a chain argument or another type of deductive argument if you prefer.

Interview Assignment 3 -

One of the best ways to learn about a subject is to discuss it with those who work in the industry. You can learn first-hand the real-world pros and cons of EHR security issues.

For this assignment, you will conduct an interview and write a paper based on the information you get in the interview. You can have a discussion with anyone you choose that works as a manager with electronic medical records and health informatic systems.

Possible interviewees:

• The head of information technology of your local hospital (or anywhere in the U.S.).
• Someone from the sales force with one of the well-known EHR companies.
• The practice director of a local health care practice that uses a large EHR system.
• Phone conference with someone from the Office of National Coordinator.
• Anyone else you can think of that would have considerable knowledge about EHRs.

Paper Topic: What are the safety and security issues they see surrounding the use of electronic health systems technology?

Questions: You are to create the questions for the interview. They may revolve around password protections, internal information thefts, outside hacking, HIPAA concerns, ransomware, employee use of personal emails, PHI concerns, or any other avenues you care to explore.

Assignment: Go to the interview with questions already formulated. Do not perform an interview unprepared and waste their time. The interview may be conducted in-person or by phone. It may be someone local, or very distant.

Write a 1.5-2.0 page paper analyzing the issues surrounding you discovered that are security concerns in the interview. It should NOT be a transcript of the interview. Provide analysis and additional outside research to support what you found in the interview. You will be graded on your strength of choice of interviewee, the depth of your questioning, outside research, and the structure of your write up.
