Assignment:

Suppose the officers who stopped Tyvessel White suspected he might have cocaine, so they follow him hoping he would violate a traffic law to justify a stop. Suppose Tyvessel makes a turn without signaling properly, so they make the stop and subsequently find the cocaine as mentioned in the video. Would the traffic stop be a valid seizure or a violation of Tyvessel's Fourth Amendment rights? Explain your answer.

The focus in Vehicle Stops is on what reasonable, articulable suspicion looks like, and when a vehicle stop can lead to a subsequent search. Explain your choices in this scenario by addressing the following questions: What does "reasonable, articulable" suspicion mean? How dependent are these types of determinations on training and experience? How can courts decide the reasonableness issue?

Describe what a pretextual stop is and when it is allowable. Discuss at least two situations, one of which describes an illegal pretextual search, and at least one of which describes a legal pretextual search.

If Tyvessel White had been stopped at a random sobriety checkpoint and the officers recognized him and arrested him the same as they did in the traffic stop depicted in the video, would the court look at the inventory search differently? Why or why not?
