Question: With prehistoric art, we find our methodologies and techniques for studying art tested. Like Sherlock Holmes, we must gather the available clues and think them through, creating theories and ideas of what happened, why it happened, and how these things are linked to the origins of art and creation. After all, there are no written records or survivors: we must rely on the objects themselves. Objects are never silent. The clues are there, and we are here to learn how to observe, analyze, and interpret those clues. What does prehistoric art tell us about the people who made these objects? Why did people decide to do art? Why did they make a certain subject and stylistic choices? What theories interest you, and what evidence is there to support those theories? Also, what evidence is against your favorite theories? (When analyzing data, it is important to think about how theories may be refuted.)
