Assignment:
Two primary sources:
Yvo of Narbona's portrayal of the Mongols
• John (Giovanni) de Plano Carpini's portrayal of the Mongols
Scholarly sources:
Excerpt from Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World: on war tactics used by Genghis Khan & Mongols by Jack Weatherford
• Webpage entitled The Pax Mongolica by Daniel C. Waugh
• Excerpts from Worlds of History on the Mongols and "barbarians" in the medieval world by Kevin Reilly and Gregory Guzman
Directions:
Discuss the following for each primary sources :
• What does the primary document portray fairly accurately about the Mongols?
• What does the primary source portray about the Mongols that may be inaccurate, incomplete, or in a distorted or exaggerated fashion?
• What does the document reveal about its own author? (Consider that the document might reveal as much about the author and his own culture as as it does about the Mongols.)
Support your analysis with short quotes from the primary sources AND with references to information from the assigned scholarly sources. This is not a standard format, but for this assignment just use short in-text citations with author and page number (or section number) in parentheses: for example, "(Yvo of Narbona, p. 2)" or "(Waugh website)" or for the Rossabi website "(Rossabi and the title of whichever of his webpages you are referring to).
