What does it mean to be an American; Who has been included as American, and who has been excluded? A second topic that is just as important is the measure this Americanness against our own expressed ideals: freedom, equality before the law, equality of opportunity, a land of immigrants, richness in diversity. As we expand into the world, we will bring this rhetoric with us ("we are the champions of democracy"). Using a combination of specific historical evidence address our historic memory of who we are in light of our actions at the turn of the twentieth century. A good answer will not be vague and superficial, but will address the complexity of the context of the period. Rather be specific about the people who have had an effect on us and the world in the name and power of the United States. Potential topics can include citizenship, to the meaning of the term the United States, to the use of aggression, to the complicity of those in power.
