This was the territory in which Rumi settled. How type of Islam does he seem to be preaching in his poems? What are some of his key ideas? Why do you think he would become such a popular Sufi prophet?

We are starting to see quite profoundly in Dunn's account of Ibn Battuta's adventures the cohesive forces of trade on Islamic zone. How did trade influence the informal development of a pan-Islamic civilization? How did trade structure the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, between elite and commoners? How does Ibn Battuta's itinerary reflect the importance of trade routes in the 14th century? Make sure to use specific examples from the book.

Ibn Battuta travels to many places beyond the traditional Arab-Iranian center of Muslim life.
