Roger Crisp believes that all forms of “persuasive" advertising are morally wrong. What does he mean by “persuasive" advertising, and what, in general, does he see unethical about it? Another author, Robert Arrington disagreed with Crisp's analysis, and in 1982 published a critique of Crisp titled, Advertising and Behaviour Control (not published in our text but mentioned in Crisp's article) in which he argues that the techniques of "persuasive" advertising do not override the four essential notions regarding the personal autonomy of consumers: autonomous desire, rational desire and choice, free choice, control and manipulation.
