1. Among these selections, we see a different brand of antislavery activism-in addition to the slave narratives we read in the previous module, here we see documents by "outsiders" (Northerners and transplanted white Southerners). How do these women press the case for abolition? What does gender have to do with their antislavery activism? What do you think would be effective in reaching their audience of white Northern women?
2. In the mid-19th century, we see an important organizational and intellectual leap from antislavery activism to women's rights activism. Working with the Declaration of Sentiments, and the documents from Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, and Angelina and Sarah Grimke, chart the logical path from abolitionist activity to women's rights work. How do these writers connect those issues? What common threads do you see among them as they seek to justify an expanded public role for women? How do they build a case for women's equality, and what impact do you think their arguments would have had?
