Question: Tom was trying to get into a lower weight class for his university wrestling team. His coach did not encourage rapid weight loss and made sure that Tom ate three normal, well-balanced meals each day. However, Tom kept losing weight and his urine pH was drifting higher. The team physician said Tom was showing signs of metabolic alkalosis. What dangerous practice might Tom have been following after each meal?
