Assignment:
Our exploration will extend beyond the foundational texts of the Bible to delve into the Christian virtues of grace, justice, and mercy. Building upon the insights gained from our study of scripture, we will examine how these virtues manifest in contemporary society, particularly within the diverse, interconnected, and urban landscapes of today's world. With a keen eye on the Christian concepts of vocation, justice, and service to one's neighbor, we will explore how these virtues are lived out in multicultural contexts and how they can guide individuals in navigating complex social issues and relationships. By applying biblical principles to the realities of modern life, the aim is to deepen our understanding of these virtues and their significance in fostering compassion, equity, and solidarity in our communities.
Given the more contemporary nature of this module, we encourage you to continue to listen thoughtfully, patiently, and compassionately to each other. Instead of approaching these topics politically (which is the primary way in which most Americans engage in social topics), the aim is to respectfully engage with contemporary concerns and make connections to the Christian scriptures.
For instance:
- What does the biblical witness offer to a world that is anxious, angry, and fragmented?
- What does the biblical witness offer to people who experience hurt, pain, and brokenness both in society and on a personal level?
- What does the biblical witness say about grace and mercy - and how do they relate to justice?
One of the guiding passages for this module comes from the Old Testament prophet, Micah. He writes, "What does the LORD require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8b).
